Planetary Health Week: Shishinoko Project Collaborates with Nagasaki University CO-OP!

Students at Nagasaki University organized a special raffle campaign from May 13 to May 24, at both the Sakamoto and Bunkyo campuses. This event, part of the Planetary Health Week (May 20-24), encouraged participants to bring in their lunch (bento) containers and plastic bottle caps. Those who participated by bringing their reusable bento containers, purchased from CO-OP, were rewarded with an instant 10 yen cash rebate upon return of their containers after meals. This initiative aimed to promote recycling efforts and reduce waste.

The university’s Shishinoko Project collects plastic bottle caps, which are then forwarded to recycling firms for conversion into vaccines. This aims to enhance recycling practices but also to increase awareness about the value of small actions in contributing to larger environmental and health goals. The campaign successfully drew attention and participation from the university community, with many expressing their surprise and appreciation for the incentives offered, such as the 10 yen cashback for the return of bento containers. This initiative resonated with many people, motivating them to find and donate the plastic bottle caps they had stored at home.

The event was a great success, with over 300 bento containers collected in just one day!

Although the raffle campaign will only be held during this collaboration, they will continue to collect bento containers and plastic bottle caps. We hope that more people will become aware of this activity and cooperate with the students!
