Nagasaki University is dedicated to “Contribution to the realization of Planetary Health worldwide by generating interdisciplinary knowledge to address the interconnected challenges facing humanity and the Earth.” The University’s research and education efforts focus on “global health,” “global risk,” and “global ecology.” As part of its forefront work in “global risk,” the Research Center for Global Risk was established on June 1, 2024.
The Center will combine insights from the humanities and social sciences and leverage Nagasaki University’s expertise in atomic bomb hibaku, peace education, nuclear weapons abolition research, and its outstanding achievements in the field of tropical medicine and infectious diseases. It will advance interdisciplinary research on the dangers of nuclear weapons use, global environmental degradation, pandemics, and other global risks that could imperil humanity’s survival. Additionally, the University will spearhead interdisciplinary research on global risks that threaten the survival of humankind, such as the risk of nuclear use, global environmental degradation, and pandemics.
The center will facilitate collaboration between the humanities and sciences to conduct international joint research and make various proposals to the global community. Additionally, it will establish an environment for interdisciplinary research to nurture the next generation of researchers, experts with policy-making abilities, and leaders in the global community.
