Planetary Health Annual Meeting 2024 (PHAM2024) Report

The Planetary Health Alliance (PHA) is a global consortium that promotes Planetary Health research and practical activities. It has more than 400 institutions (research and education institutions, governments, NGOs, etc.) from over 70 countries. In mid-April, the first annual meeting of the PHA in Asia took place at Sunway University in Malaysia, with over 700 local participants and 1,000 participants from 60 countries, including online attendees.

On the first day of the conference, the president of the university greeted the audience and introduced the university’s new initiative to make practical training in regional cooperation mandatory for all second-year students, showcasing the enthusiasm of the entire university. The following three days featured a total of thirteen plenary sessions and concurrent sessions, each focused on specific topics. The plenary sessions covered a wide range of subjects, such as cross-disciplinary topics, AI, educational innovation, energy, financial and economic innovation, peace and security, and communication. These sessions facilitated diverse discussions crossing academic boundaries. A roadmap and action plan were adopted on the final day to outline future activities. The conference concluded with an agreement to hold the next meeting in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, in the upcoming fiscal year.

The PHA Japan Hub, with Nagasaki University serving as the secretariat, also hosted three well-attended sessions featuring active discussions.
